Designing the perfect logo

The perfect logo should be the most succinct and visual articulation of a company's or organisation's proposition.

The challenge in many cases is to identify the core positioning and this can be done in many ways. Here at Westgate as a first step we conduct stakeholder workshops for our clients, to gather key insights on the overall positioning of a company, organisation, product or brand. We then follow this up with in-depth research to ensure we have a 360 degree view to enable us to articulate the vision, values and core proposition. Once this is agreed, we have the perfect starting point to design a logo.

With so many digital marketing channels and platforms available today, the modern identity must be fluid, flexible and applicable in many different forms, although inevitably a single core mark or logo is fundamental to the whole process. The logo mark must be a unique visual representation of the core proposition, engaging effectively with the key target audiences and stakeholders. This ensures ‘stand out’ in a crowded market place and allows the organisation's or brand's unique character and values to be conveyed. The logo is the 'core essence' and the focal point of any integrated marketing plan.

The process of creating a unique ‘stand out' logo design requires a skilled and experience design team to interpret the proposition in the most creative way. This requires patience to explore a range of ideas and visual concepts, always remembering that the logo must have longevity as the perfect visual distillation of a identity's proposition. The art of a great logo is a strong, simple idea that is realised with visual distinction. I have taken a look through our design archive and put together a selection of logos that perfectly illustrate our approach to logo design.
